So I have an old HP computer with a Pentium D 820. It runs Windows 7 fine but I was wondering if there was a cheap but effective upgrade path. I was looking at upgrading to a Pentium D 945 but I was wondering if there were any other alternatives for super cheap.

If u want to keep the mobo, you could go with a core 2 quad/extreme

do you have a certain gpu in mind or would integrated graphics be enough?

I was thinking a 750Ti or even a 950, something that wouldn't require an expensive PSU. I live in Australia so the PC component prices are super expensive, especially since the exchange rate has fallen.

i guess you could get a g3258, a cheap mobo, and a 400psu and a 750 ti

buying used would work too

I was thinking of going with g3258 as it has a low TDP, allowing for pretty good overclocking with less expensive cooling if you get good on the silicon lottery.

I decided to get a PCPartPicker build down to see what the price would end up as.

CPU: G3258 $89

Mobo: ASRock h81 Pro BTC $58

RAM: G.Skill Value Series 1x8GB 1333MHz $63

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB $69

GPU: MSI GeForce 750Ti 2GB $169

Case: Cougar MX300 $49

PSU: Corsair CX 430 80+ Bronze $77

Optical: LG GH24NSB0 $17

Total: $591

It would be cheaper with used parts but I'm not sure to what extent.
