Choosing an operating system for a game server

Hello everyone,

 

I am planning using a Dell poweredge 1950 and my fibre internet to host a few game servers from home for the fun of it. I am mainly doing this as a learning experience so please no blasting me about how much easier and cheaper it is to rents servers. I know. =P

 

I'm not sure what to do for an operating system for my server, I suppose I could use Win7 pretty easily or linux. I assume I would have to virtual box each game I want to host, but I'm just not sure how to start.

 

I would like to run Minecraft, Dayz (OA mod), arma3, teamspeak and cloud my personal media to be accessed from other computers in my house and form outside my network.

 

I've been told to "just run everything at once in windows 7" but I really doesn't think thats the best way to get it done.

EDIT: I've owned the server for a couple years now, it has two Xeon quad core @ 2.8 I believe and 8Gb of ram

 

I could probably get any OS, I have win7 of any version on hand. and windows server 2008. and of course linux

ive ran many servers before. have you bought the server? if so specs please?

Windows server 2008, or linux, or if you have too oh god windows 7. Or apache

ive ran many servers before. have you bought the server? if so specs please?

What OS software do you have access to ?

I could probably get any OS, I have win7 of any version on hand. and windows server 2008. and of course linux

Hello everyone,

 

I am planning using a Dell poweredge 1950 and my fibre internet to host a few game servers from home for the fun of it. I am mainly doing this as a learning experience so please no blasting me about how much easier and cheaper it is to rents servers. I know. =P

 

I'm not sure what to do for an operating system for my server, I suppose I could use Win7 pretty easily or linux. I assume I would have to virtual box each game I want to host, but I'm just not sure how to start.

 

I would like to run Minecraft, Dayz (OA mod), arma3, teamspeak and cloud my personal media to be accessed from other computers in my house and form outside my network.

 

I've been told to "just run everything at once in windows 7" but I really doesn't think thats the best way to get it done.

EDIT: I've owned the server for a couple years now, it has two Xeon quad core @ 2.8 I believe and 8Gb of ram

just one thing they are ALOT louder than what you think, i mean you would need a rack! i had mine under my bed, door closed upstairs. and i could hear it downstairs in the other corner of the house easily, this is with a 2950

I believe its 2008 R2, but i'd have to dig it out of my dvd storage case lol  considering jameshumphries47 suggested I use windows server it would probably be the route I will go.

oh right then! aha i had to sell mine! but when i leave home i will get myself a rack! too much power and noise, for a family home :( so VM's until them! they say oh dont own a server! but they are super cool :D

Well I know minecraft, teamspeak and configuring a personal cloud works awesome on Linux.  CentOS or Debian would be the preffered choice since they are so freaking stable.  There is a lot you can do to manage and monitor your applications (not to say you can't in windows.), as well as the OS being free/ less resource intensive so more bang for the buck.  What does your network configuration?  You may have a fibre connection but you could easily get bottle necked depending on the type of router, switch and nic cards you have.  Oh and virtualization in Linux is awesome,  be sure to check if your server supports cpu virtualization, if I recall correctly most of those poweredges do not... I will check and update if it does.

 

Edit: so the poweredge 1950 looks like it supports CPU virtualization but poweredges under that do not.

The Fibre connection is 50Mbps Down/ 30Mbps Up. which isn't bad for fooling around with the server with my friends.

 

My router is a D-link extreme gigabit LAN with dual band wireless job, that is taking care of my network for now. Soon though I will be running my network with PFsene and only using the D-link as a wireless access.

 

the switch that i have for all my wired connections (besides the server witch goes right into the D-link) is an HP 2524 10/100base.

 

So if my server supports CPU virtualization, would you recommend just running Linux as a base OS and windows Vbox for the game servers? if so, what version of Linux? or would the latest Ubuntu copy be fine?

Yeah I know its not the best, but it is really better than any cable speed/price in my area. and I could up grade for more speed even up to gigabit. But cost per how much internet I really use becomes an issue lol but hey the ping is half that of the cable internet I used to have.

 

Anyways this whole getting a server up and running and being able to play with friends is all a learning experience for myself. 

 

your input has been very interesting and I will be researching the different OS opinions you have laid out to see what will work the best for my application. be the easiest for me to learn and work with to achieve a working system.

This is very interesting my company was throwing away 5 of these which are currently sat in my shed, I'm pretty sure they were running VMware ESX maybe one has Windows 2003 on it (as they are pretty old) they each have loads of ram.  

 

Keep us updated as an ARMA3 and TeamSpeak server is looking like a really good idea
