Why don't Consumer Motherboards Accept ECC Memory?

Most consumer motherboards that I've seen don't support ECC memory... Why is that?

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

Because they are consumer motherboards, consumers don't use ecc so it will be pointless to validate it

ECC is for servers. ECC is required for servers, as they're up 24/7. If they go down, it's not going to be good - especially for a business who has servers managing a lot of it. On consumer motherboards, it's not needed. They aren't designed to run 24/7, so they don't need ECC.

ECC is for servers. ECC is required for servers, as they're up 24/7. If they go down, it's not going to be good - especially for a business who has servers managing a lot of it. On consumer motherboards, it's not needed. They aren't designed to run 24/7, so they don't need ECC.

That's actually wrong - ECC memory is for mission critical applications regardless of the run time. Yes, this is a major thing for servers however it isn't isolated to it. Workstations for 3D graphics and similar tasks also benefit from ECC RAM and this is why boards like the Asus P9X79 WS which is a workstation board support ECC.

All I want is 16GB of non-ECC DDR3 dimms! Why won't you get your act together, RAM manufacturers? You can have 16GB ECC, you can only have 8GB non-ECC?

ECC modules are designed differently, to send extra bits along with each transfer, and the memory controller needs to have support for it in order to know how to handle those extra bits.

And also the chipset.. From memory current Intel platforms require the C602 chipset.
