Although this is just a thought, if a GPU of the lower tier of your GPU, if its then time to upgrade. For example,

 

If a GTX 950 beats a GTX 660 in benchmarks

If a GTX 960 beats a GTX 670 in benchmarks...etc.

I would say it's honestly time to upgrade when you are no longer getting the performance you would like or If you just like to stay with the most current gen.

gpus should be upgraded when what ou want to do cant be done on your current card. lets say in a year, amd releases the 400 series, and my 280x is now 2 generations old. if it still does what i want it to, the why upgrade to a 480/470?
