My friend just got his rig today and after many tests, he can only get to 4.3 ghz on 1.25 volts. Is that a bad chip for overclocking or is he doing something wrong.

That's pretty bad. I get 4.6 GHZ @ 1.215 volts on my 4790k

Why would your friend buy a 4770k?

It's not particularly bad, but not great. He's probably just gotten unlucky with the chip.

What cooler is he using?

I get 4.7 with 1.25 volts, but he already had a 4770k so yeah.

4.3GHz isn't bad. I get 4.4GHz on my 4770k. It's just the luck of the draw. Most 4770k's get 4.2-4.5.

The 4770k is still a great chip however I would agree for a new rig I would just go for Skylake but if it's not in their budget then the 4790k would be my 2nd pick.

That's pretty good. I can't get above 4.7 on mine. I mean, 4770k has a 3.5 stock so it increased by .8 ghz.
