Yeah, it would. Does he overclock? Only playing at 1080p? What are the games that he plays?

Not really if he plays on 1080p 60Hz. Yes if he plays on 1440p 60Hz or 1080p 120/144Hz.

It probably would be a good idea for upcoming games and having a good bit of extra horsepower and vram :).

though if he's not that hardcore then the 770 will do okay for now.

He should wait for next generation then. He doesn't really need the extra power now.

I currently have a 770 2gb card.

Here is my current build:

FX 6300 3.5Ghz (4.1Ghz turbo)
EVGA SC GTX 770 2gb
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 (Revision 4)
G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB DDR3 1600
SAMSUNG 840 Pro SSD 256GB
Secondary 500GB hard drive
Corsair H110i liquid CPU cooler
CORSAIR HX750 750W power supply
Obsidian 750D Airflow Edition full tower ATX case

I'm planning to upgrade to the i7 6700k Skylake with new motherboard, 16 gb ram, and graphics card of the new MSI lightning 980 ti (not out yet) so I can play max or almost max settings on a 3440x1440p monitor.

My opinion is that it definitely depends on his mindset. The 770 2gb will play any new game coming out decently for a while, but he'd have to mess with and lower the settings, especially on 1080p. I'm the type who used to be okay with it because I was always tight on budget and hated that new stuff came out all the time anyways (so we'll always be behind the times). My concession now is that I can budget to get 60fps at least on 1440p rather than go for 4k.

If he doesn't need 60fps on 1080p constant and is okay with just 30 to 60fps depending on setting configuration, I recommend that he wait it out. He can certainly save more for a 980 or even 980 ti (yea it's a lot of money). New and better stuff comes out all the time, but the more he waits the more he saves for better upgrades down the line.

Perhaps it's important for him to understand the computer landscape in the next year and make a judgement then. 980 ti recently came out and is amazing, but the geforce 1000 series is next year. Just as Skylake cpu is demonstrating new tech, the 980 ti is in similar fashion for what the 1000 series will showcase.

Is he willing to deal with decent fps on any new game coming out and then see what the 1000 series will offer? Or he definitely wants 60fps constant now? Keep in mind that many titan owners still feel upset about the 980 ti. New stuff is always around the corner.

Man, I sounded like I just gave a rant, but I think it all kind of still ties together.
