Hi Linustechtips Forum,

I work for an architecture office in Luxembourg in the middle of Europe and I need your help.

We need a new strong PC, mostly for rendering in V-Ray for 3ds MAX. I'm quite new to all this rendering thing but I understood that the more cores you have the better.

So why not go for 32 Core system?

The intel CPU with most cores I found is the  i7-5960X for +- 1140 € with 16 Cores in Hyper-threading.

On the other side I found the AMD FX-8350 for +- 180 € but only 8 Cores no Hyper-threading.

I tried to compare both of these with cpuboss.com : http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-5960X-vs-AMD-FX-8350

I really don't know if the almost 1000 € diffrence is really worth it if we compare one cpu to another...

Now how do I find the right Motherboard if I want to go for 2 CPUs? :/

I'm kind of lost here and would really appreciate your help.

Hilite

FX's are not that powerful but are a lot cheaper.

I7's and Xeon's are very expensive (and probably overpriced) but preform SOO much better.

If money is not an issue, i would go with a Xeon E5 2699 v3

But if you something as cheap as possible, go with an FX CPU

sadly the fx8350 looks much better on paper then it actually is.

i have it and its great for rendering, but its 3 years old. get 2 xeons in a dualcpu ws board if you can

this combo might work:

Thanks guys <3

I really appreciate your help :)

I have a budget of +- 3000€, but if I get get something for less, ofc it would be better.

After reading your replies, I think I'll go with a single Xeon E5-2650 or E5-2670 depending on the rest of the rig.

Never trust CPUBOSS or GPUBOSS

They're highly inaccurate when it comes to most benchmarks

If you want to save money and still have performance the I7-5820k would be enough

If you really want to spend money then go for a Xeon E5 instead

Is there somewhere else you recmomend I could compare CPU's?
