University rankings are horse shit, look at the modules on that course before deciding.

For example, when looking for a Comp. Sci degree, I wanted one in which they didn't require Maths A-Level because I prefer practical to theory. I chose the University of Newcastle but didn't get the grades so I ended up at LJMU. It was better because the worse universities actually give you more teaching help.

They are important, but should not be your only factor in the decision.

Agreed. Find a few colleges that will be a good fit for you (The atmosphere, the location, etc.) then try to get into the one that is most highly ranked in your field. If you hate the college, you will either have a terrible time for four years, or quit and go to another one. Find one that fits you, have a good time, and study hard!

Hey! New SIgnature!

I'm supposedly a person on the Internet, but you'll never know if I'm human or not ;)

I'm from hong kong, and the competition for uni is bullshit crazy, not that i have no chance, but i want a good environment (calm) to study cs rather than a competitive one. HKUST is crazy conpetitive

Fellow Hong Konger here and tell me about it xD I live in Sai Kung (right next to UST) but I'm going abroad for Uni [i'm 18], I don't like Hong Kong's UNIs.

As for rankings, unless you're Ivy people don't really care to be honest. Rather go for a Uni you enjoy than one that happens to be ranked X worldwide. Your future employer is going to care whether you have a degree or not; not whether your university was rank 35 or rank 36 internationally.

In my experience even lesser-known universities that might be considered bad can still be just as good at teaching you what you need to know. I didn't get into my first choice of university and thus ended up at Kingston University London, which isn't particularly highly-ranked and it seemed almost nobody where I lived had even heard of, and I thought "oh great, I can tell I'm not going to enjoy this". Quite the opposite, in reality. I'm doing computer science and almost every teacher/lecturer I've had over the last 3 years has been excellent, they all clearly knew exactly what they were talking about and I feel like I'm being taught just fine. Rankings aren't everything.

On a more generic note, wherever you go make sure you give your university's societies a good look, they really are the best places to make friends while you're there. I had a right miserable time in my first year because I knew very few people, but in my second year joined a new society for anime/tabletop games and befriended a bunch of people there, now I'm having a great time and looking forward to going back to start my 3rd year next month. :)
