My father greatly desires a laptop that can handle things like F@H and Civilization: Beyond Earth. I am currently planning on building him a laptop, but it seems rather painful and I would like to explore other options first. He is opposed to prebuilts because he doesn't like how they are mass-produced over seas. So, I thought I would try external graphics for his MacBook Air 11" 2011. Is it worth it? Do they work well? Should I do it, or just build him a laptop? What external graphics might you recommend?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

well, if you are using steam, you can always "Stream" the game, build your own PC than connect the two so you can effectively play it on the laptop while its actually running on the desktop somewhere in the house.

He wants to be able to use it on vacations, in coffee shops, etc... I am mostly interested in external graphics.

Thats a really strange reason to go the exotic route of building a laptop. Does he realize that pretty much all computer electronics are manufactured overseas?

Anyways, the sleekest solution for an external gpu would probably be this http://www.amazon.com/Akitio-AK-T2PC-TIA-AKTU-Thunder2-PCIe-Box/dp/B00LTAUTHE

plus a psu and gpu, total costs would be around 500$ or so and the hassel of setting it up.

He wouldnt be able to carry around the external gpu easily of course.

Not unless it's just plug and play...
