Router recommendation?

Go to solution Solved by Ahaber,

Ok thank you, I'll start researching those brands.

I have the linksys WRT1900AC. It is an amazing router, but it also comes with an amazing price. What is your budget for this?

I have a Belkin router from 2008/2009 that will no longer update when I connect to it. It's also starting to drop the signal in the house and randomly won't allow us to connect until we unplug it and plug it back in.

Do any of you have a recommendation for a good router? I eventually plan to play games across my wifi, though I'm not sure if that helps in any recommendations.

Thank you.

V

If you plan on doing game streaming over your connection youre gonna need a 5GHz connection, take a look at some Linksys or Netgear routers, those are the ones Ive had the best experience with.

4690K // 212 EVO // Z97-PRO // Vengeance 16GB // GTX 770 GTX 970 // MX100 128GB // Toshiba 1TB // Air 540 // HX650

Logitech G502 RGB // Corsair K65 RGB (MX Red)

Well, after doing some random searches online, I think I'm going to be looking in the $200 range. I've seen some recommendations for the Nighthawk R7000? Though I don't know if that's going to be overkill or not.

I have definitely heard good things about that router, however I don't believe it support MU-MIMO technology which is the latest thing where the router can communicate with multiple devices at once.

If you have plans for smart home devices in the future the google OnHub might be good. It is also extremely easy to set up. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/meet-onhub-new-router-for-new-way-to-wi.html

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm looking at that original one you recommended. Should I select that one, Is there anything I should watch out for with a refurbished model? Or just bite the bullet and go with a new one out of the box?

There are lots of options, the main reason I have the one I have is because it supports open source software to be run on it. It was release almost 1 year ago, so it may not support the newest standards, however it works fine for me.

The only problems that I can see with buying used or refurbished is the fact that linksys includes an online login feature that allows you to login from anywhere on the internet. This means that if the router was resold it could potentially be logged into by the previous user, however this is likely to not be a problem if you push the reset button.

Thanks for the information, I'm probably going to go with that Linksys router that's refurbished. So long as I can reset it to make sure nobody has access to it I should be good. Thanks again.

Just wanted to let you know that I went with a new Linksys AC1900. Holy crap is it fast! I didn't realize how bad my old router was until I started using this new one. Thank you very much for your help!
