I recently bought a TP-Link AV500mbps powerline adapter ( http://tinyurl.com/o36lvry ) after switching from a really bad wireless adapter ( http://tinyurl.com/nef4suvfor my desktop. The reason I chose Power line Networking over a long Ethernet cable is because my computer is upstairs in the corner of my house where the router is downstairs and I did not want a long cable running up the stairs going into my room when Powerline Networking is through the wall already. I wanted to know the difference between Powerline and ethernet and how much speed I am giving up for the simplicity of it going in the powerlines instead of a long ethernet cable. Thank you!

Powerlines depend on many things, starting with the wiring in your house. Easiest way to see is do a speedtest while connected to the powerline, then go and do a speedtest when connected to the router directly thru ethernet. Use a laptop if its inconvenient to bring your desktop up and down stairs. Also, do several runs at speedtest in each config to rule out glitches.

When in doubt, re-format.

There are security concerns with ethernet over powerline.  Basically your neighbors could access your network if they also had a powerline adapter.  Most units have a built in encryption feature to prevent this.

Speeds have been getting better, but there I find the connection is not super reliable in my home.

I used of of the earlier ones from devolo with only about 50mbit and i never had problems with it.

Also used it in different buildings (new and old ones).

If you are comparing it to ethernet speed it will be slower no doubt but the modern adapters should have no problem with the internet speeds used in most households.

Also i never had problems with latency or packet loss.
