I suggest you to install open source drivers, cause AMDs proprietary drivers suck.

arent the open source drivers installed automatically?

Well AMD drivers suck, thats true, but if you want more than 10 FPS in minecraft with 3x 290x i suggest you install the proprietary ones.

I also was running Elementary os Freya and i just went to AMD website and downloaded 64 bit (my computer) drivers for my GPU and ubuntu, and installed them. (it took a bit tweakking)

And after installation in applications list, write "drivers", open only option that pops up and chek that it says proprietary closed sourse drivers and it is in use and chekked, after that restart your computer and all done.

You wont get nearly as good performance as under windows but youl get better than with open sourse ones...

My performance was.. [tested with minecraft]

Windows 10 AMD 15.7.1 x64                             100-500 FPS (in menu, thousands)

Elementary OS Freya AMD Closed Drivers x64        ~60 FPS

Elementary OS Freya Open sourse drivers x64       ~10 FPS

arent the open source drivers installed automatically?

Yes they are.
