This is an interesting direction for Android phones to take. Specs are taking a back seat to improving battery, camera, and software. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Android phones because specs won't matter to a certain extent as the average user won't even use software to take advantage of these specs. My highest priorities, even as a techie, when buying a phone are:

  • software support and updates
  • battery life
  • design
  • camera

Btw, here's a review by the Verge of the Moto X.

I certainly won't be ditching my Nexus 4 for this but there's no doubt in my mind that this is good hardware.

I think it's an okay phone, but nothing amazing like the nexus 4 or htc one.

Hardware/Price isn't great; flagship price for sub flagship hardware. The Snapdragon 800 can do the same thing, and runs faster than what the X8 the Moto X has.

It's a nice phone, but it doesn't really offer anything that the cheaper Nexus 4 doesn't in a realistic comparison. There's no guarantee it'll get software updates (unless they do a Google edition, which is likely). The customization thing and advanced Google Now feature is cool though.

I honestly think Google might be scrapping the Nexus program and just getting manufacturers to release Google edition phones instead.

Guys, couple things to keep in mind. Quad-Core CPUs aren't even properly utilised by Android at this point in time, and even on high end phones the experience can be woefully sluggish thanks to poor coding on things like TouchWiz.

The Moto X is a high end device. In benchmarks it performs better than the Galaxy S4 and HTC One graphically, and for processing it's behind by such a small amount that it isn't worth mentioning. There's no point in criticising it for having insigificantly weaker hardware because that doesn't necessarily accurately represent the experience you will have with the device yourself.

Have a look at the Nexus 4, or any other Nexus device. Their hardware ends up becoming much less powerful than the newer high-end devices such as the Galaxy S4 or HTC One, and yet the experience of using one is still generally smoother and better than it is on these supposedly more powerful devices.

I'm going to wait until I can try out the phone in the flesh before condemning it for not being a high-end device. :)

This.

Looks cool, I really like it. Just to downsides: No wireless charging (I want that!) and only available in the USA (that's a problem).

Specs wise the average user won't tell the difference especially since this isn't running an insanely bloated skin.

They've already confirmed a Google Edition is in the works.

I want to see the next iteration of the maxx more. I don't care too much about software, specs, and camera. My only real concern is the battery. There's no point to having a phone if the battery is always dead or you always have to plug it in. Give me an updated razr maxx or put a higher capacity in one of the flagship phones (Verizon specifically because that's my carrier)
