My friend wants to upgrade his ram like mine but only wants to buy 8 more gigs (two 4 sticks).

Yes and no. While they may work, there is not guarantee that they will, as with any set of RAM that doesn't come together. 

 

It's best to match the timings as well (CL9D, vs the CL10D he already has). 

 

Watch out. The timings are different. (I think, I'm pretty tired) It's not good to mix timings. Some motherboards don't care, and some won't post. It's really hit and miss.

Match the timings to the loosest timings (highest) and it "should" run fine. In worse case some tinkering may be required.
