Hi

The Story:

I need to build a new pc to replace my second workstation (mostly VM usage and Linux), my old friend with it's Core 2Duo E-8400 just died today  :( (RIP 2006-2015)

The Plan:

Converting my current system into my second workstation and so "upgrading" my current system (Cpu/Mobo/Ram)

I have a backup PSU/GPU for the second workstation. (Corsair HX750i and GTX 670)

My current system is a lovely i7-3770k with 16Gb 1866 DDR3 with a H100i for cooling.

The Problem:

I can't decide for the new cpu.

The new Skylake 6700k (4c/8t) or Haswell-E 5820k (6c/12t)

What i will take: (almost sure except for Mobo of course)

-For the motherboard: i will go with Asus Z170-Deluxe or Asus x99-Deluxe

-For the ram: 32-64 Gb Corsair DDR4

-For the cooling: Corsair H100i GTX with Noctua fans

The Usage Senario:

I play a lot of games (last titles) and use Blender/AdobeSuite on a daily basis + good amount of encoding (h.264)/multi-tasking on vm's

I have a Asus GTX 980 Strix connected to 3*Asus PB278Q in displayport (i don't play in surround !)

Thanks for your help !

(excuse me for the bad english)

Given your workload, you're probably going to benefit nicely from the use of a hexa-core processor.

As such I would recommend the 5820K and the Asus X99-Deluxe.

DAYTONA

PROCESSOR - AMD RYZEN 7 3700X
MOTHERBOARD - ASUS PRIME X370-PRO
RAM - 32GB (4x8GB) CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX DDR4-2400
CPU COOLING - NOCTUA NH-D14
GRAPHICS CARD - EVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 980Ti SC+ ACX 2.0 w/ BACKPLATE
BOOT and PROGRAMS - CORSAIR MP600 1TB
GAMES and FILES - TOSHIBA 2TB
INTERNAL BACKUP - WESTERN DIGITAL GREEN 4TB
POWER SUPPLY - CORSAIR RM850i
CASE - CORSAIR OBSIDIAN 750D

If you're looking for something that would have an upgrade path I'd say probably the 6700k. the x99 series has an upgrade path, but they're all expensive as shit and probably overkill for most work

@daniellearmouth:

Thanks for your advice, when i checked the new Skylake 6700K on multiples sites (Guru3D/KitGuru/Tom'sHardware), the 5820k had a small advantage for my kind of usage senario, but the higher price than the new one make me perplex for choosing.

@Inception9269:

Thanks for your point on the upgrading path, right now i'm not sure that i will use the benefit of the usb 3.1 and M.2 Lanes or the overclocking.

For the X99, sure they are expensive..... but overkill ? when i checked some charts, the Z170 plateform was right behind the X99.
