if i wanted to overclock an i5 2500k to like 4.2 ghz or 4.0ghz would that harm my pc components?

unless you use too much voltage or it runs too hot. Motherboard needs quality VRM as well. At a modest OC like 4.2-4.0 generally you should be okay, but post your cooler and motherboard anyway.

As long as your temperatures and voltage are not high that it should be fine for a very long time and as long as your motherboard is decent. The 2500k is also know to be overclocked to even higher clock speeds up to 4.8Ghz

okay my motherboard is a gigabyte ga z77x ud3h and i would be using a thermalrite silver arrow or a h100 not sure yet

you'll be fine, you can go higher if your chip allows it with either cooler.
