Weird network connection problems

Go to solution Solved by techguru,

So I recently moved into a dorm and here we have an internet provider that is free (included in the rent).

I conected my laptop to the wall with an ethernet cable - It found the network and I ordered the service via their automatic system, got my logins and everything and 15 minutes later internet was working perfectly.

Then I disconnected the ethernet cable from the laptop, set up my desktop PC and connected the internet outlet to the PC and the network keeps identifying forever and then stays as Unidentified network - Limited, but when I reconnect the same cable to the laptop it's fine - any ideas?

the login is probably tied to the mac address of the ethernet

probably to prevent more then 1 person using the same login

you could technically clone the mac address and see if it works

Maybe , but when connecting the network cable to a switch, and splitting the connection to the laptop and desktop it still only connects to the laptop -  shouldn't that work?

no..cause the switch is still just transfering the connection to the other pc

a switch is basically nothing more then a splitter

what I think you probably should have done was use a router ..signup with the router connected..and then split from the router to the other pc's

then the login would be tied to the routers mac address

MAC address was the issue - I'll be talking to them soon when I get a router, thanks for the help
