Has anyone built a rig with an MSI Gaming 7 Z97A board and a 5th generation Intel CPU? I currently am looking at builds with this board, but I all I see is builds with 4th generation CPUs. I've made sure to check the compatibility multiple times on MSI's website and it says that they should be ready for 5th generation CPUs out of the box, but I would like to read about someone's experience with these two components together before buying them.

The 'Broadwell' (the codename for 5th generation Intel Core chips) desktop CPUs were delayed due to a number of issues (read this AnandTech review for a bit more information), so they were only released a short time ago. Now that 'Skylake' (the codename for the 6th generation chips) has been released, there aren't that many people who are looking to upgrade to Broadwell (because if they already have a compatible socket motherboard the upgrade probably isn't worth it, and Skylake uses a different socket, so it needs a new motherboard). There will definitely be some people who have done so, but nowhere near as many who upgraded to 4th generation.

it will work just fine when this board was released it already included support for broadwell chips...but i highly recommend you do your homework because unless you plan to use the onboard graphics the 4790K chip is superior as it overclock better with less voltages most of the time, it's also cheaper and more readily available...

I was very much thinking about using the 4790K and still am, but I was just wondering how the broadwell chips performed with this certain motherboard. I guess you guys though have convinced me now that I'm better off getting a 4790K rather than a 5820K or some other broadwell chip, and that's why no one has really cared about the fact that this mobo supported the 5th generation CPUs and just went with a 4790K or a 4690K.

5820K is an HASWELL-E processor...it's not supported by the 1150 socket motherboard...you need X99 for this along with DDR4 RAM which will end up being much more expensive...what you're refering to as a ''broadwell'' chip is the i7-5775C which is not any better than the i7-4790K EXCEPT for onboard graphics which are MUCH more powerful...if you plan on using a dedicated GPU just get the i7-4790K.

Well thanks for telling me that, you've saved me $350 and the struggle of finding out what went wrong when trying to boot up my new rig after building it, I didn't quite get what MSI meant when vaguely said this board supports 5th generation processors out of the box. Sorry for the newbie question, as you can see, I'm still learning about these types of things.

yeah...it can be miss leading but the i7-5820K, i7-5930 and i7-5960X are all HASWELL based CPU and they are in fact 4th gen CPU's...but on X99 sockets wich is aimed at enthusiast that require more than 4 hyper-threaded cores...they are not 5th gen CPU's...and the true 5th gen CPU's (broadwell) aren't worth your time and money.
