So, I was playing GTA V with Afterburner opened, the card is a GTX 970 Phantom, so the memory is OC'd a lil' bit, most of the time I was using 3.75GB of memory used and no drop whatsoever  (only one to 48FPS while editing a video in R* Video editor). Am I lucky?

Not really. All 970s have the same 3.5GB "issue" but it's massively exaggerated with how much it will affect performance.

Not if you reach 4GB without OC, its unplayable, or even with OC.., apparently around 3.75 is the limit.

Nah every card has the slower ram portion, but it wouldn't affect performance that much, only if you go over 4gb.

funny thing to see on my 970: if i come near the ram limit of the 3.5gb e.g. gta v says 3.3gb,  the ram usage will be about the same as when gta v says it uses only 3gb

Well, if you're hitting 4GB, you're not even using vRAM past that point, so of course it's unplayable. It's the same with any card if you go over their vRAM capacity.

Fine, 3.99GB, still is unplayable, 32bits of connection is really not enough.

At pretty much max settings i hit around 3.8GB VRAM usage in GTA V, so a single 1080p video in addtition to GTA uses 4GB VRAM and this of course causes a lot of stutter.

I don't feel any difference between being under 3.5GB and being under 4GB. (still 70fps)

When in doubt: C4
