Is it just to share files ? Windows Server software works in the same way as a client OS. Server 2012 is built on Windows 8.

Are you going to use it for any other roles, like DNS, DHCP, Print Server, Domain Controller, Run Plex, media sharing ?

I have had a windows Server at home for the last 10 years, Wouldn't be without one.

Is it Server 2012, Server 2012 R2 or Server R2 Essentials you have ?

You can enable SSTP VPN for remote access to the server, backups can be managed by the server or just backed up to a server location.

What HDD setup you think of using ? Best to keep Server OS & Data Separate if possible.

Server 2012, I am not sure of the HDD I have 2 hard drives in  there but I am sure I will add more when I find the money I would just like to be able to map a network drive to my main pcs and store stuff in a default folder

Mine started of simple and over the years and doing my job I got more comfortable with Server OS's.

I'd just start with what you said, just simply share folders, Backup Share, Pictures Share, Music Share, Documents Share.

As I said installing a server is not different to installing windows and running windows.

It's only when you add other roles it gets more complicated.
