what exactly is a skylake build?

'Skylake' is the codename for the new line of Intel CPUs that are being released. So far only the i5-6600K and i7-6700K are available, but more will be coming soon. They run on a new Intel chipset and socket (LGA1151) and (mostly) DDR4.

You're confident saying that when you have literally no idea what the OP wants to use the machine for? Well, OK...

Yep, yolo

EDIT: He said he was using it mainly for gaming. My yolo worked

so will choosing the i5-6600k be a cheaper build?

Answers to these depend on what you want to do with the machine.edit: Also, you may want to consider going for a Skylake build (based around an i5-6600K or i7-6700K) instead.

Sky lake isn't worth it right now... You won't see much of a performance boost honestly.. Few FPS

I7 6700K, 8 gigs ddr4 2400 ram, 980TI is the way to go from here

4690/4790K are socket 1150, there will not be anything to buy from here on out for the rig, you will have to buy a motherboard and cpu to up grade, no new builds on this platform if you can avoid it at all.

No, it'll be a bit more expensive (DDR3 is still cheaper than DDR4, for example), but you might find the slight increase in price is worth it. You'll get a small performance improvement with the i5-6600K over the i5-4690K, but there are also chipset improvements in the motherboards. Also, the old socket LGA1150 (which the i5-4690K runs on) is now being replaced by the LGA1151, so you'll have more options to upgrade in the future.

You should read some reviews on the i5-6600K and Z170 boards:
