Second GTX 970 for sli vs GTX 980ti

MGsubbie

Specs :

Intel i7 3770k @ 4.2Ghz
Asus Sabertooth Z77

Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler

2x4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 RAM @ 1600Mhz

MSI Geforce GTX 970

Corsair CX500

Corsair Graphite 230t

Crucial MX100 256GB SSD

WD Blue 1TB

Currently I'm playing on a 1080p tv, but I'm planning to save up money to do an upgrade, probably to 1440p 144Hz.

So I'm planning to buy a second 970 (probably second hand) and put it in sli. I figure that for "older" games with Dx11, 3.5GB will be sufficient, and the alternate frame rendering will get me good framerates; while DX12 will take care of the increasing VRAM requirements in the future with the memory stacking.

I know that my PSU isn't sufficient, but I'm also going to replace it with a 750-850W gold rated one. (Thinking of Corsair RM.)

Or do you recommend me selling my 970 and buying a 980ti instead? Also note that I live in Europe, so the prices are a bit different. I can buy and sell a used 970 for about €300-€315, while the cheapest I can get a 980ti at is €777, which would make it roughly 50% more expensive.

Thanks for the help.

I recommend the stronger single gpu over an SLI from a lower tier card..

If you can afford it, Id go for a 980ti, and get rid of that cx series psu.. It's bad news.

It depends a lot on resolution. The higher and more AA the more vram but honestly I think you can mostly tweak game settings to stay inside 3.5 I say since you already have a 970 add another one unless you have a buyer lined up willing to pay good money for your current 970

I'm planning on that. But which wattage would depend whether I go for sli or a single card.

If you already have a 970 it might be more cost effective just get a second one. I went from 970sli to 980ti and have a better experience with the games I play. Performance is suppose to be very close but in games I find the 980ti to perform slightly better

970 has 4GB VRAM. Yes yes yes, it's slower or whatever, it still has 4GB VRAM.

If your going to replace your PSU, replace your Graphics card too. I would say, Sell your 970, go for a single 980Ti Two 970 make the cost *roughly of a 980Ti*  And memory stacking (I have asked this question before) will only occur if Developers enable it, (Which probably wont happen for a while)

I would also recommend an EVGA PSU

I don't like crossfire/SLI so much so I have to say single 980Ti

Selling my 970 and getting a 980ti would cost me €460-470, getting a second hand 970 would cost me €300-310. Saving up that money can fund the PSU.

Until DX12 becomes a standard for all devs, A 980Ti will still be better.

If you can flip the 970 for a good enough price, I'd say go for the 980 Ti. The 3.5GB RAM on the 970 is really borderline.

The 970 is a high tier card considering it runs up with the 980...

Edit: My bad I read that as the 970 as a low end card not lower than 980ti haha
