Editing Den has UPSs?

I saw this photo on Linus's twitter page and I noticed it has a UPS by the computer. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CMLAgr0UMAAlswT.jpg:large

 

I know Linus said there would be a video on the new computers. Why would they need them though. The servers have UPSs and batteries on the RAID cards. The key is to save often. It seems like a waste of money considering that Linus thinks Channel SuperFun is a money pit.

I think the point is to have enough time for all the data to be saved and finish before it just cuts power and they loose their work. Those RAID batteries are way to small anyways

Just keeping this here as a Backup upon backup, a UPS for each editing station is a good idea just I case auto save fails or they are doing local rendering.

I think the point is to have enough time for all the data to be saved and finish before it just cuts power and they loose their work. Those RAID batteries are way to small anyways

That's true. But if Linus was smart, he'd have the servers UPSs send an event to shutdown the server. About the RAID batteries, wouldn't it also depend on how much data is in the buffer?

 

i have a UPS

they are great, saved me a lot 

I've had the power go out for about 5 seconds in storm and I was on my laptop. The only time it was an issue, it was in the summer and there was some electrical work being done and the power was out for 30 minutes. I might get one to run my eventual NAS and desktop.

I've read that the battery is used to save the cache of the RAID card. When the RAID cards puts the data in the cache to be written, Windows thinks it has been written to disk but it hasn't.

I don't know a ton about RAID batteries but I judging from the size and the UPS size for the server you can guess which can last longer

Yeah, you need the UPS to prevent losing data locally. As for the RAID card batteries, if you use LSI cards, for the newer cards and some of the 92xx generation, you can get CacheVault instead of a RAID battery. It uses a bank of capacitors instead of a battery and pretty much stores what's in the card's RAM to a memory chip (It's a really tiny SSD). Since the data is stored in there, if the capacitors run out of power, it's okay. As soon as the RAID card gets power again, it immediately restores it from the memory chip.

 

I have CacheVault on my LSI MegaRAID controller and it's pretty neat stuff. No need to have to worry about checking battery life either.

 

But yeah, I'm saving up for a large UPS too, to be shared with the NAS / Desktop.
