Immediate Graphics Card Replacement

Go to solution Solved by Polyvalent,

grab a 290; price / performance they're killer and the XFX version is pretty bomb if you're a fan of them

source: literally just bought one this week

So as of last night my video card died. It was a XFX Radeon HD7970 Ghz edition. Not to brag but this was the best card I've seen. But I know there is better and I'm looking for something on par or better. I've been away from video card news and advancements since I had this reliable one. So what cards AMD or Nvidia would you recommend.

I'm running a i7 4970k as well. Currently mitx and going full atx soon.

Price ceiling is $300 even.

Thanks for the quick responce you all. Now those cards onlly cost $250 for the 290, what would you recommend for the next step.

The 290 already looks better than my card by a bit.

I'd still recommend a 290 tbh

So I'm looking at the SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon R9 290. What do you guys think about it. I had a Sapphire Vapor-x 5950 back in the day and it ran super cool. Is it worth having the vapor-x or not?

From my research it seemed the Vapor X was best 290, cooler and quieter than most others.

Problems being it's long and it's thick (2.5 slots basically, so might interfere with other PCIe slots).

currently that wouldn't be a a problem since I have room currently in my mITX case.

Alright just a fair warning haha. No PCIe slots to block when you only have 1 in the first place, eh? I have a PCS+ 290 and it's also 2.5 slots, so basically I can't crossfire this card on my mATX board.

An R9 290, R9 290X, or a GTX 970 would be a good upgrade. AMD cards will give you the best bang for your buck.

personally I'd go for a GTX 970 it can handle anything you throw at at high-ultra settings

Also is it worth getting the 290x vs the 290 i posted?

Depends upon price difference. The 290 is pretty close to the 290X in performance so the 290X can't be much more than a 290 for it to be worth it.

I have a 4790k and a 290, I run 1440p.  Only games that have ever given me trouble are Crysis 3 and Witcher 3, so unoptimized trash.  1080p you are laughing most games

thanks. I only run 1080p but I'm glad you chimed in. Really the only games I play are Anno 2070 and Anno 2070.
