I have built a new PC and now have installed Windows 10. Upon further inspection in the System page, of my 8GB of memory, only 3.94GB is "usable". Looking at Resource Monitor, I have 4139MB of "Hardware Reserved" memory. I would like to clear this up so I can use all 8GB. I have tried finding something in my BIOS, but I cannot find anything to change. I have also tried msconfig.exe, unchecking the box for maximum memory. Also checked CPU for bent pins, Nothing has worked.

System Specs:

Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Rev 4.0

AMD FX-6300 @ 3.50GHz

8GB G.Skill Sniper

500GB Samsung 850 EVO

2x ASUS Radeon R9 270 OC Edition

I have tried using Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 and have still not fixed this. All of them are 64 bit OS's.

My BIOS shows that I have 8GB installed, as does Windows.

Help pls.

I'm not 100% sure what to do but I'd say go ahead and try and reset your BIOS / clear CMOS.

Uhm, this might sound stupid, but if it works it's not stupid.

I see you have an Xfire config. Check your BIOS and see if the system shares memory with the GPUs

check ur ram kit number, i think ur having unsupported modules and the mobo cant use all of it

its rare but a known issue when a motherboard doesnt support ur dimms

Could be it, I checked Gigabyte's memory support, and I didn't see these. I've also tried ram that is on their "supported" page and it is the same error.

If it happens across clean installs, it's got to be HW related. The two DIMMs you got, are they from a kit? Are the serial numbers on the close to each other? WHat happens if you use the DIMMs one at a time?

System does not boot if I only use one. Dual Channel memory. Yes, they are from a kit. I'll check the SN on them in a bit.

Gskill.com has more extensive list. AMD chips are super picky. Intel optimized DIMMs rarely work.

pretty much thats exactly why it doesnt work proper then ( u wouldnt be the first to have this ..especially on amd rigs cuz intel is more flexible and less motherboard dependant and amd is almost pure dependant on motherboard dimm support )

Here is the exact listing that I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416&cm_re=gskill_sniper-_-20-231-416-_-Product

Im not going to be too picky, I got GPU's, Mobo, CPU, and PSU all for free.

Note: Only one DIMM per channel is supported for DDR3-1866MHz and higher speed as using an AM3+ CPU.

^^ put one dimm in one channel and one dimm in the other channel * could resolve the issue *

u got 2 different colors on ur dimm slots... put on in one color and one in the other instead of the same colors ( remember the dimms closer to the cpu are better )

So if I switched to an Intel CPU and board, in theory, it should work?

also depends on the board really, but in theory it should usually work cuz intel is more flexible... keep in mind that again that can happen but its less frequent than with amd

ram support is all about motherboard compatibility

I just tried, system didn't boot. Reset BIOS, still didn't. Moved memory back, now it boots.

100% memory compatibility issue, because compatible / stable rams should work in any dimm anyways... and if u have to have dimms in a exact order or dimm slot to have it work... no thats a huge compatibility problem , i could run my dimms in anyway in anyslot i want. i could use 1 in slot 1-2-3-4  or 2 in slot 1-2 or 1-3 it doesnt matter really ( if its proper supported/stable aka compatible with the board )   the only thing i would lose doing so might be dual channel to singlechannel ( due to not having them in dual channel dimms or so )

just keep in mind u dont have to have the exact model number shown in the memory compatibilty... but theres a chance it wont work as it should be if u get ram that aint on the list... ( its not like they can test each dimm on the world )   u just had the bad luck of actually having a kit that doesnt work proper with the board :l

is task manager wigging out? You have single channel ram and it says that 2 slots are used. Also says that it's 800MHz.. Didn't know DDR3 came that low??

u kno that 800mhz ram is ddr3 1600 right... its double data rate its normal for cpu-z to show the actual mhz instead of the ddr3 rating, thus cpu-z will always show half... on  a 3200kit itl show 1600mhz and on a 2400mhz kit itl show 1200mhz... thus with a 1600mhz kit itl show 800mhz

Kewl, did you even read the post?

We're talking about Task Manager which accounts for Double Data Rate and displays 'effective frequency'
