Against the CoC to link. My recommendation would be to clean install Windows 10, and sign up for the Insider program, which will give you an activation, but will force you to use Insider builds

You can download the Windows 8.1 ISO here and then "flash" it to a flash drive or DVD to be installed regularly.

does downloading it mean a fresh download that wipes the rest of my stuff?

If you want a clean install, then yes. You can just buy a key and enter it whenever your trial runs out. If you do this then you won't be losing any data, as no reinstall would be needed.

Sounds like you only need to activate it with a legit key. Buy the same version (OEM/Retail/Upgrade and Home/Pro/Enterprise) of Windows anywhere and use the key that comes with it. No need to reinstall.

 

Everyone here knows there's a way to circumvent the need to activate and no-one here will provide you with the instruction son how to do it.
