Taunted by the CPU?

OK, so I'm starting the OC process on my i7-5930k.

Step 1: Set the cores to sync and then set to 45

Step 2: Set the core voltage to 1.3

Step 3: Save and reboot

The OC failed right away and the bios automatically reset my settings to default.

Same process as above but went to 40 to start as a multiplier and then rebooted. Made it to Windows and started the initial stress testing. (Screen shot included).

So my question is - could this be a really crappy bin chip? I'm still within the time frame that I 'could' send it back and then get a new chip. Or just keep going up until I find the top end and then work on memory?

Cooler? Motherboard? I feel like not even getting to 4ghz is pretty weird.

Sounds like pretty lame chip.

I'd keep going, two tests with a 1/2ghz change won't tell you the full story.

Just try like, 4.3 @ 1.3v, 4.4 @ 1.3v, and 4.5 @ 1.31v

1.31 is what I would say, the maximum you want to be at with a high-grade consumer cooling solution.

Well if you can return it for a different one I'd find the max oc for the voltages you are safe with running and if the oc isn't high enough for you then return and try again.

A few things I have done to assist my OC on my 4930K (granted different manufacturing process):

1. Turn voltage from manual to offset ...somehting like +0.050 that is 5 hundredths of a volt. (feel free to increment it up to where the IDLE voltage (this will be the highest voltage it will work under since load will cause voltage over cores to droop, hence the term Vdroop, is 1.35v) Anything over is dangerous for the CPU.
2. Adjust LLC to HIGH or 7, depending on how your BIOS has it labeled.
3. Adjust current range to 120% on the processor (not the memory controller or cache)
4. Verify FSB = 100 MHz, Turbo= Enabled, and Intel Speedstep is OFF
5. If you STILL can't post, disable all RAM OCs and set memory controller LLC to high and frequency to 110% (sometimes a weak IMC can kill a 2011-3's OC potential in the presence of high-quality RAM kits)

Let us know how it turns out.

It's failing at everything above 40...   :(

There is a couple other things you could try to tweak it and get it stable but that does just sound like a bad chip, period. If you can return it and swap it out then I personally would go ahead and do that.

I don't have another X99 motherboard just laying around and I don't have another 1000w platinum PSU just laying around..

Well, i'd rma the cpu first then. Intel is pretty quick so if that's the issue it could be resolved pretty fast. But rmas with other companies can take a week or two.

If you're issues occur when you start Stressing, it could be due to any number of component or software-related issues. Begin first by eliminating the variables easiest to do so... namely reducing your components to factory standard settings, then try replacing/interchanging RAM, followed by unplugging your peripherals.

It is imperative that no additional load be put onto your board if you have a setup which requires near your 1000W capacity. I don't want to throw gasoline on the fire, but...are you perhaps using a newly upgraded Windows 10? I've noticed a horrible issue between some bench tools and freshly upgraded W10 systems. Many drivers and updates may need to be installed to allow normal benching behavior to continue.

OK, so I turned off the computer and let it sit for a few mins.. I unplugged all the stuff that didn't actually 'need' to be plugged in - a few external HD's, headphones, controllers, webcam, cell phone.. Then I reseated the memory, checked all the cables and turned it back on. I then followed the initial steps and set the core ratio limit to 45, turned off the computer, turned it back on and then....

CPU is hitting 4.5GHz with - I think - pretty good temps considering...

Thoughts?

The current setup is this:

CPU: i7-5930k

MOBO: X99-A/3.1

MEM: G.Skill DDR4 2400 16gigs

VIDEO: MSI GTX 980ti Gaming

PSU: EVGA 1000w platinum

COOLING: Corsair H105 Extreme

HD: 2x SSD 250gig, 1x 2TB

OS: Win 10 Pro

Now, I did have 3x external drives, PS3 controller, Note3, WebCam, HeadPhones plugged in - nothing really..

I was able after turning off the PC, unplugging everything connected to it, checking all the cabling, reseating the memory, and then restarting to hit 4.5GHz. Anything beyond that was an automatic blue screen. But the 4.5GHz can at least be stress tested for 15mins, so that's a start.

I'm pretty tired so I'm going to get some rest and then start looking at this again tomorrow.

You may also wish to check a few of the BIOS settings in my post above.

Try turning your CPU voltage from manual to offset +0.050

Adjust LLC to "HIGH" or "7", depending on how your BIOS has it labeled.

Adjust "current range" to 120% on the processor (not the memory controller or cache)

Verify "FSB" = 100 MHz, "Turbo"= Enabled, and "Intel Speedstep", or "Stepping" is set to OFF

If possible, let me know what these settings are currently for you. Happy benching!
