Okay, thanks for the help.

Any suggestions for better sound quality? Or is the sound quality I have now set in stone?

Set in stone, even with a $200 dac/amp the difference in quality would be minuscule :(

So I was originally using some crappy headphones I got in a bundle. They were okay, but I wanted a better audio experience. I decided to get myself the Kingston HyperX Cloud headset. Good God it like hugs my head.

Going from one headset to the other, I observed better sound quality in something like Dirt 3. However, whilst listening to some music, I heard a crackle (only happened once).

I'm starting to think that my on-board audio is holding my headphones back. Anyone care to shed some light?

My motherboard is an MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition

As a side note, if anyone suggests an additional audio solution, I don't want a DAC/AMP. I have nothing against them, I just don't want one for aesthetic purposes.

Because you mentioned crackling audio and the hookups for front-audio are notorious for being poorly insulated and receive a lot of electrical interference (especially from adjacent front-USB ports).  It was a long shot but that could have been the issue had you been using it.
