Haswell DRAM Question???

Go to solution Solved by Volbet,

It's DDR (Double Data Rate) ram. This means you have to take whatever CPU-Z says and times it by 2

Edit: And yes, those temp are too high for a stock voltage. Reseat the block and reapply the thermal paste  (Assuming we are talking about celsius)

I have Corsair Dominator Plat Ram their clocked at 2400, I set that in the bios. But when I boot up into ASUS CPU Z for instance it says their running at 1200. I'm confused why aren't they running at their intended speed. Does haswell have a certain limit to the DRAM clock? And I am running my 4770K at stock because I can't get any decent temps @4.5Ghz and when I run any stress tests like like Cuda or Intel's Extreme Overclocking program @stock it goes to 80 degrees with a H100i.

-Is it normal for the 4770K to get to 80C under stress @stock speeds? (w/ a H100i)

-And is their a limit on haswell for DRAM freq? (I have 4x4 16GB)

Thanks for the help

You won't be able to overclock this since the best temp to stay when your cpu is loaded is 80C and below. I would try reseating the cooler and applying new thermal paste like the MX4/IC Diamond and see if the temps are better. The max DRAM frequency depends on your motherboard. Check your motherboard's manufacturer's site to see the max DRAM frequency that your board can support.

True. Mine says 800 MHZ when its at, YOU GUESSED IT! 1600MHZ

This question gets asked too often.  I'd have thought people watching Linus' videos would already know this...

That is why if you shop for RAM at large retailers it says DDR3 1600... not 1600MHz.  And why people say "1600 speed" RAM, not 1600MHz. :)  With DDR3 the clock frequency is half the effective speed.

One important thing to remember about Haswell is that due to how the new memory controller works your ability to overclock your RAM goes down the more you overclock the CPU. If you're able to get a high overclock on both CPU and RAM you've been lucky and got a good chip.

Official RAM support is 1600, how high you can overclock depends on your motherboard, and of course what the RAM sticks you've bought are certified for. With an overclocked CPU however there is no guarantee that you can continue running your ram at its certified 2400.

I think in Linus' own tutorial video for Haswell he got the CPU to 4.7 GHz (or around there) with ram at 1866....

this is entirely speculation

Haswell has a phenomenal memory controller

I have found stability with 2400MHz memory at 4.6GHz and 4.7GHz

I have also found stability overclocking my memory

4.6ghz mem at 2666MHz

4.7GHz mem at 2600MHz

True i wasnt able to find 2666MHz stability at 4.7 ghz, but honestly 66mhz less, really?

12 hours stable at 4.7GHz with mem chips at 2600MHz (relaxed timings)

your load temps seem a bit high at stock for an 100i. try to re seat the pump like others have suggested or try different thermal paste, i preffer to spread my paste on the haswell cpu, just get more consistant results.

what are your ambient temps.

Their 35C-40C pritty normal but whenever I start a stresstest they skyrocket to 80C I'm going to reapply the thermal and see if my results vary. What voltage are you running at for 4.7Ghz? My system won't even boot @4.5Ghz without 1.278V I think I just got a bad CPU

your cpu is prolly average as most are.

i need about 1.3V-1.325V for stability at 4.5Ghz, although I have never tried 4.5. 4.6 and 4.7 is what i shot for.

at 4.7 i need 1.41V. I was not able to achieve this on air without temps sky rocketing over 95c. I decided to delid my chip to bring temps down, i do not recommended you delid, in fear of you breaking something. i have been deliding cpus since the very first iteration of the ihs, socket 754 athlon.

i have logged most of my data here.

You just got a very good chip. I and many I know got chips that barely overclock at all, and they overclock even worse if you attempt to run the memory above 1600. A friend of mine has a chip where the memory must be taken down to 1333 just to get 4.1 on the CPU.
