Driving 144hz..

DrtyDiesel

So I have a build that I've been piecing together for the near future(hopefully in a couple weeks) and one thing I've noticed is the phrase "having enough graphics power to drive 144hz".

At first I was going to run a gtx 970 for 1080p gaming and was told I'd need two in SLI to drive 144hz in 1080p. Then when I decided to maybe build a 1440p 144hz gaming rig, I was told It would be highly recommended I get two gtx 980 ti's in SLI to drive that resolution at 144hz.

I guess my question, since I'm not really sure how to ask it, is do I really need to be able to achieve 144fps or close to it in order to run a 144hz monitor? I know there's a lot of mixed info but I already have experience with 1080p 144hz gaming with my 780 ti and ASUS monitor.

In my opinion, when I was gaming and getting mid 60s to 70s fps in games it was still smooth and no screen tearing or anything. So I'm not sure why people say you need to get 100+ fps in order to use a 144hz monitor.

I was planning on getting two 980 ti's but now I'm thinking if I can play most games at 60+ fps at 1440p with one GPU, then I'll save the expense of buying the other one. Besides that, the main games I play where the 144hz would help would be BF4, CS:GO, and black ops 3 when it comes out.

Figured I'd get yalls opinion on things, I'll be leaving myself open for a second card anyway in case it truly is needed.

PS. The monitor I'll be buying is going to be the Acer 1440p 144hz ips display.

You need 144 FPS to give a point in having a 144Hz monitor.

As in, give it a point rather than in just getting a 100Hz monitor for example.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

It depends on what settings you want to run. A single 980Ti can run 1440p at 144Hz, but you'll need to turn down settings. And as for running 100FPS+, it's not needed, but it's where you'll get the most out of the monitor. No point in getting a 144Hz monitor if you're just going to just be running 60FPS.

Gettting enough GPU horsepower is spending enough money, but some games just wont run at 144hz no matter how many GTX 980tis you throw at them due to CPU limitations.

A single EVGA GTX 980Ti SC ACX 2.0 http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Graphics-Card-06G-P4-4993-KR/dp/B00YDAYLTY/ref=sr_1_10?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1438910196&sr=1-10&keywords=980ti will easily push a 1080p 144Hz monitor at max settings in 95% of games on the market today. I have the 980Ti on a ROG Swift gaming at 1440p and it gives great frame rates. At 1080p it will have no problem.

Not really true, seeing as my previous encounter with 144hz monitor and running bf4 at 80fps average gave a huge and noticeable increase in smooth gameplay compared to a 60hz monitor.

I'll be wanting to run everything maxed out, I love eye candy and really want to step up to 1440p over 1080p gaming.

Gettting enough GPU horsepower is spending enough money, but some games just wont run at 144hz no matter how many GTX 980tis you throw at them due to CPU limitations.

I understand, that's what I was getting at, even though you're not running 144 fps you can still run a 144hz monitor and get smoother gameplay over a 60hz monitor.

I'll be running 1440p 144hz, I used to have a 1080p 144hz monitor. I know what you mean though and appreciate your help.

I guess my main question would be, does the GPU control and drive the refresh rate, or is it controlled by the monitor?

And seeing as I'm not looking to get 100+ fps in games like gta v or the witcher 3, its more for when I play competitive games like cod, CS GO, and BF4. I know in those titles I should be able to get AT LEAST 90fps average. Well with bf4 anyway, I know I'll probably get 200+ in csgo lol

The GPU drives the frames per second but the monitor limits the maximum frames you can view. 144Hz means you cannot "see" more than 144fps.

Alright that's what I was thinking. Thank you.

Yeah I'll most likely just grab a single gtx 980 ti and if not happy with it I'll just buy a second lol. I'm more into badass single card performance vs using SLI. I thought about getting a titan x, but I can't justify the extra $350 for similar performance.

The TITAN X will give you absolutely no benefits (unless you do any rendering or editing work) and especially at 1440p.

I agree, that's why I figured I'd save money and go with the 980 ti. My build is going to have a nuclear reactor theme, I wanted to go over the top with x99 and SLI titan x's but I've decided to just go with skylake i5 and a single 980 ti for now. If I wanted to do the x99 with titans I'd be regretting wasting money on a gaming only rig

Thanks, I was looking up reviews and benchmarks and everyone was saying it was perfectly fine for 144hz with a single 980 ti. I'm glad to have a user with the same monitor I'm wanting to get tell me the same thing.

I was going to just go with an rog swift but for the same money, I'd much rather have an ips panel

Man I can't wait. I just moved into a new house and I'm waiting to get my finances in order. Then I should be saving at least $300/week. I'll read your summary, thanks again.

Definitely liked your take on the monitor. I'm gaming on a 60hz 32" lg TV right now and it makes my head hurt after a while lol.

I miss my 144hz monitor, but oh well, can't wait to get one again but 1440p this time.
