Computer getting too hot with minimal use

Go to solution Solved by grind,

Ok, I think it's fixed, the thermal paste on the GPU was all dried.. I didn't want to open it up before because of the warranty and stuff, but then I gave up and opened it.. everything was fine, except for the paste.. Now it's running with AS5 :v

Idle temps went down by 5C, temps when watching youtube videos on firefox down by more than 20C, and gaming I'll check later, but it's probably fine too..

And the CPU was also fine, it was only breathing the GPU's warm air and not being able to cool down properly..

Anyways thanks people :)

My computer does that a lot of times. Once its hot, then it would also be very slow on performance especially when I started using vpn with my connection. I haven't cracked the problem yet and I am also waiting for a forum like this wherein I could be guided by the same issue.

I would recommend doing what I did, but about the VPN I have no clue :|

Hello people,

I went traveling for a couple of weeks and got back home a few days ago, and since then I realized my pc Is working too hot. I understand some things about computers but am still shit at troubleshooting, so please help me <3

Anyways my computer is an i7 4790k running at stock, watercooled with an Enermax liqtech 240

Msi Radeon R9 290 Gaming 4G, also stock, with custom high rpm fan speed profile (which basically goes to 100% over 80C

The case is a Cougar MX700, with 2 intake fans and 3 outtake ones (2 of the latter being from the radiator), there's also one fan inside the case directing some flow to the GPU.

The temps hover at around 40C for the CPU and 50C for the GPU at idle. During games I see temps around 80C for the CPU and 95C for the GPU.

And a really weird thing I notice is that if there's an youtube video playing the GPU goes as high as 80C, with 0% GPU usage (but high Core and memory clocks).

There must be something wrong with this.. It's winter here (temperatures range from 20 to 25C), and when I built the PC during summer, temps weren't so high..

I think it's not dust, the case has dustfilters and I cleaned the whole system before I traveled..

I really have no idea where this comes from.. Anyways thanks in advance for the help.

Check task manager, and see if background tasks are taking system resources.

Also 40C for the cpu and 50C on the gpu does not seem far above normal...

Cpu: Ryzen 2700 @ 4.0Ghz | Motherboard: Hero VI x370 | Gpu: EVGA RTX 2080 | Cooler: Custom Water loop | Ram: 16GB Trident Z 3000MHz

PSU: RM650x + Braided cables | Case:  painted Corsair c70 | Monitor: MSI 1440p 144hz VA | Drives: 500GB 850 Evo (OS)

Yeah, I'm not too worried with the idle temps, just put it there as a comparison, what is bugging me is the GPU at 80C when I'm just on youtube, and the cpu being liquid cooled at 80C when gaming :|

Check for dust, and if all fans are working

Or bad contact of the CPU cooler with the cpu

No dust, fans are working, I'll check the contact but I think it should be fine

You know what temperatures you got before?

I'm not copying helping, really :P

Don't remember exactly, but in the summer I was trying to have my GPU not go over 85C, and I remember achieving that..

What I first thought was weird and reason I started to check temps and stuff is that before traveling I could play GTA V with 55-75 FPS, and now it was struggling to mantain 45 FPS..

Even if you have 100% speed on all fans?

That's a lot of throttling, so it's not a faulty sensor, you might need to change the thermal paste on the GPU, how old is it by the way?

about one year, and yes, fans at 100%

Even if that's the case, one year seems a bit fast for the thermal paste to be bad..

At least I found out the high temps while watching videos is a thing in firefox, chrome didn't do it :|

I'm gonna try gaming again, changed the GPU from Uber to Quiet mode, let's see if that does something or not lol
