Upgrade to 2011?

Go to solution Solved by Samdb,

First of all, your processor is fairly new and there isn't much need to upgrade at the moment. However in the next few generations the opportunity to upgrade will be much greater. The X79 platform is really only intended for workstation computers, however you are running out of RAM quickly on your current rig. This is a factor you will have to take into consideration when thinking about an upgrade, do you really need the extra RAM? I can see that you are heavily multi tasking and you may benefit from the upgrade, however at the moment you are still fine and as I mentioned before, in a generations time, should be the time to upgrade. There is also the possibility that you could sell your current components to help pay for the upgrade, otherwise you could use them in something like a server or Virtual Machine system.

So, I'm considering upgrading to 2011 for Ivy-E.

At the moment I have a 3770K with 32GB of RAM, where on a typical day 20-25GB is used. When I start using VM's, I'm running short.

I am not upgrading for more processing power or more PCI-E lines, but simply to be able to use 64GB.

So, should I upgrade or shouldn't I?

If you can wait a year, wait a year. Why? Haswell Extreme with 8 cores at 3,0GHz+ will destroy absolutely everything you throw at it.

If you are not upgrading to a six core processor this year/eight core processor next year anyway, I see no point. 64GB of RAM will be good for you but the processor 3820 is slower than i7 3770k and can't be overclocked. Ivy Bridge Extreme (48xx-49xx) will be all unlocked but not much better core-to-core than your processor.

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

Looks like you have plenty of RAM and CPU. Dont know your disksetup. But if you are running all on a single HDD you will be suffering bad.

WM runs best on a seperate HDD or even better a SSD.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing

Mine VM's are running of my storage server, and my disk set up is fine. I am running out of RAM, so clearly I don't have plenty.

Haswell-E will be coming in 2015 and will use a new chipset. You can upgrade now to LGA 2011 and you will still have the option to upgrade to a next gen 8-core Ivy Bridge-E cpu.

I won't really upgrade to get more CPU performance, but mainly to get more RAM. My 3770K is enough for me for now, so I don't need an 8 core.

Yeah, I got that. I was just saying that you have the possibility if you decide to upgrade later on if you change your platform to LGA 2011. :)
