Long long time ago ... (2006 actually)

A friend of mine had this CB-50 that he wanted to turn into a chopper.  It slowly turned into a rat bike instead, so I bought it off him.

Because the forks, springs and wheels were too far gone and none of the brakes worked, I slapped on a set of MB-5 yokes, forks, springs, swing arm, wheels, brakes (with braided lines at the front) and gauges.

This pic was taken the first time I rode it.

Later on it received a shortened MB-5 fender and the MB-5 fairing.

Spoiler

I had a full restoration planned and had already bought gaskets etc to give the old engine an overhaul, but just days before I planned to tear it down the cops pulled me over and put it on one of their rolling roads (to check if it could exceed the legal maximum limit of 28MPH, for those in the US).

They promptly confiscated it because it did 45MPH (which surprised me because I never got it past 34MPH on a flat road, which would have been within the tolerance allowed).

Seeing as it was my third infraction, I never got it back.  It failed to sell on the police auction (where only dealers are allowed) so it probably was crushed.

Because at those speeds it's a motorcycle rather than a moped the insurance isn't valid, it doesn't conform to its certificate of conformity, it isn't exempt from tax anymore, I didn't have the proper drivers license, was operating a non-legal vehicle on public roads, etc etc.  The total fine for all those infractions was close to $2.5K, and after 3 of those fines I decided that it was enough.

I love 50cc bikes more than the big stuff (having owned a CB400 and a jap import FZR400RR I know they're just too big and heavy to my liking).  However there's just no fun in it anymore here.

dude they pulled a sketchy move, on a rolling road they are suposed to deduct ~50% of your speed bechause theres less rolling resistance.

My best friend's brother got a moped in exchange for painting a shed. Being that he raced dirt bikes his dad was pretty good with engines and fixed it right up.

I recently got into dirt biking and have thought about how much fun it would be to have something street legal to ride to work. Plus the fuel savings would be awesome. In the US do you need a motorcycle license to ride a moped?

I just don't really see the point of mopeds here in AUS. You need a license, and you can at the very least get a 125cc bike so you can cruise on the highway a tiny bit more comfortably.

Fuel consumption works out to be about the same for the amount you are revving the tits out of a 50cc, not to mention hills.

Rego costs the same also.

Maybe in the US or in the UK or something, but i never really got the hype of them?
