Good morning guys! My system is:

CPU: i7-4790

MoBo: Asrock Z97 Extreme4

RAM: 12GB Kingston DDR3

SSD: Samsung 850EVO 500GB

PSU: Be Quiet! Straight Power 10 800W

GPU: Sapphire Radeon 5870 1GB

I have the following problem:

I got a Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X (2 x 8pin pci-e connectors) from a friend to upgrade the gpu, but when i plugged it in my system it only booted once with heavy artifacts on screen and on the next reboot no signal at all! The side Vapor-X logo does light up, the fans spin but no signal. I tried every port available (dvi-d, hdmi, display port) but to no avail... When I plugged back my 5870 everything worked perfectly. I must note, here, that my friend checked the 280x before he gave it to me and it was working. I though it may be an incompatibility so I returned it but the thing is that it does not work on his computer too, now! The card is out of warranty, so we are trying to find a solution here. Still, when plugged the lights turn on, the fans spin but no signal. What might have happened?

My PSU (http://www.bequiet.com/en/powersupply/524) has 4 12V rails that can supply 20-24 amps per rail. Is it possible that this might have caused the problem? How many amps per rail does 280X need? From what I've read it would be better if there was a single 12V rail with a sufficient amp pool to draw from. But still, even if the amperage was not enough, I suppose, the only thing that would have happened would be the vga not working on this psu. But why wouldn't it work on the original PC? Nevertheless, the 5870 (2 x 6pin pci-e connectors) runs perfectly! Could the PSU be the perpetrator?

Thanks in advance

sounds like you may have shocked your card with static electricity.  And that boot was its dying breathe. Honestly I don't see that card ever running again as you aren't even getting the LED to light up.  The board is still supplying power to the fans, are the fans on max? or just spinning

Where did I say that the LEDs are not lighting up? I wrote  "Still, when plugged the lights turn on, the fans spin but no signal. "   Static electricity shock? How could this have happened? All the LEDs light up and the fans spin as they usually do. There are also 6 green LEDs on top of the card that show gpu activity percentage. When in idle mode 2-3 of them should light, as they do.

oops I thought it said "doesn't light up" its too early in the morning lol.  But well then you still may have a dead card.  Did you get drivers for it? the fact that it instantly artifacted could have meant you shocked it when holding it or if it was put on carpet or maybe touched it against the outside of the anti static bag? those are the common ways it could get shocked. If the PSU was the culprit then it would have worked in your buddy's PC

No worries!  :)

With the 280x on the PC does not even post  :( It probably is not a matter of drivers.

the fact that it instantly artifacted could have meant you shocked it when holding it or if it was put on carpet or maybe touched it against the outside of the anti static bag? those are the common ways it could get shocked.

I am aware of that danger and that's why I always use anti-static bubble wrap plastic to put gpus, ram modules etc on. I do not even touch them with bare hands for that reason.

If the PSU was the culprit then it would have worked in your buddy's PC

My thoughts exactly! I think that even with inadequate amperage the worst thing that could happen would be the gpu not to work. But certainly not get fried! Am I wrong?

Oh, and another thing, two 12V rails of 24amps, each are not enough for 280X?

I run a 290 on a 730W psu and have no problems,  I once OC'd my CPU and GPU and the PSU was like "suck on this" and just shut off my computer.  The psu (if not powerful enough) just straight up will shut off, not cause those problems, and booting up your card doesn't go to max draw

Of course, on idle mode it uses around 50watts, hence the problem is elsewhere. Besides the PSU is 800W 80plus Gold, I don't think it is inadequate for one gpu... The only thing that troubles me is that it is not single rail 12V, but instead it has 4 12V rails of 20-20-24-24amps each. But still it should be enough... Well, I sadly gather that the card has kicked the bucket...
