Okay simple put it is this

I would ideally like to just do back end stuff, but I am wondering should I learn just about the backend software development or both front and backend development for beginners.

I want to do it as a job but as said I want to do backend stuff more than design.

So learn HTML/CSS and Ruby/Python etc, or just learn Ruby/Python and other back end items.

Many thanks!

Learn HTML otherwise you wont be able to test your code. It's not hard to learn TBH. Then learn CSS for implementation of the ruby or python. If you intend on getting on to other programming languages later or for making small programs outside of websites, go python. If not it's up to you. I've only used python out of those 2 but I love it and It's got me started on programming.

So its an advantage to learn HTML/CSS Javascript as well as Python and stuff.

Also im free to go which ever languages I wish, I am not employed in the subject yet so free rains as it where.

Yes, that is basically so you can show off your programs in a nicer environment. Also when you do find work, you would have to implement your own code sometimes, it's always useful to know HTML at least and CSS is just a bonus. It's nice to know what the people you are working with are dealing with sometimes.

Superb thanks, I'll start learning it tomorrow then.

Oh just to add, I am looking at some courses to purchase to learn HTML from (I'd rather pay for a bundle like these)

Anyways here is what I have found what would you recommend.

https://deals.techdirt.com/sales/complete-job-ready-developer-course + https://deals.techdirt.com/sales/python-programming-for-beginners

Or https://deals.techdirt.com/sales/learn-to-code-2015-course-bundle

Which one would work better

I have no idea. I learned literally through a friend showing me the basics, me going, OK I want to do this and researching it. I'm not a web developer or anything, I just like to code and make stuff :P . Learn "" the hard way would be my recommendation for purchasing a book, but there are loads of free ones out there, especially Python. Good luck with whatever you do though. :)

Even if you don't plan to do much with web design you will still want to learn client side web development as you'll need to learn how to interact between the client and server. So yeah, learn your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as well.

I'm not sure as I've never seen them recommended before. I'll throw in some suggestions based on what I have seen recommended before. The following Web developer resources can get you started as a beginner and also provides a path to follow so you're not left with the "what next" feeling (at least for a while)

  • Web Development using Python & Django - This guides you through some tutorials to follow as a beginner. It'll get you familiar with the client side with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, then move you into the server side using Python.
  • The Odin Project - Like the above, this is another set of tutorials that guides you through the process of starting step by step. Instead of Python, these tutorials use Ruby for the server side work.
  • Develop a Job - This site is designed to teach you how to start a career in web development so it's worth a read since that's what you're considering.

As a bonus, all the above are free. Additionally, if you like learning through video tutorials I'll add Treehouse and Lynda (support Linus by using their offer code) as places to learn web development (feel free to combine with the above free resources). Both require monthly payments, but both have a free trial you can test things out with before they charge you anything. TreeHouse will give you a structured path to follow (if you want, if not you can just watch the lessons you want). Lynda doesn't have the same kind of structure but still covers the same topics, you just pick them out yourself.
