Backing up files

I am getting an sdd in two days and I am going to format my hard drive then install windows on the sdd. I want backup select folders like music, game saves, etc, so should I just copy the folders I want on to an external hard drive or should I use some backing up software?

If its just music, save files, etc i would just copy it. If you have full programs you need to back up i'd recommend using software.
