4K upgrade help

So  I just got myself a zotac 980ti amp extreme and want to upgrade to 4k. I was originally looking at the AMH A399U but it is about the same dpi as my current 1440p monitor meaning I would get more usable space than my 27 inch but I wouldn't get the increased sharpness like I would on a 27 or 28 inch 4k monitor. So I was looking for some opinions about whether I should get a 27-28 inch 4k for the extra sharpness or just go for the more functional larger monitor with the same sharpness as a 27  inch 1440p. I would like more usable space for programming and working on projects but I am not sure if a 27 inch 4k will give that to me.

4K is amazing for media consumption and gaming, but I wouldn't recommend it for productivity purposes. You might prefer 21:9 1440p (3440x1440)

right now 21:9 is just too far out of my budget so 4k is the next best thing with the same number of pixels wide but more height.

The issue is scaling; not all programs have an ability to scale which can make reading text a painful chore.

The difference is insignificant; it will still require scaling. I think the AMH A399U may be your best bet.

For example; I need to scale Chrome to 175% otherwise I literally have to squint/bring my face to the screen in order to read text.

ok thank you for this information. it is as i feared 28 inches just is too small for 4k. Now I just have to decide if want to wait and see if any companies are releasing a 4k 32" or higher g-sync monitor in 2015 or if I should just go for the AMH A399U when I have the money.

You're welcome. Dell has a 23" 4K monitor which I cannot even fathom how difficult reading text is at 100% scaling.

Hard to take seriously you mentioning budget, when you buy a 980ti. I hope you are not one of these people who get the most expensive system and then use it with the worst possible monitor you can find.

 

Anyway, if you want a good gaming xp, you pick one of the gsync ones from this list (4k wise, theres not many):

21:9 monitors are over $1000 dollars and a good 4k is around $400-600 and will have more usable space. as much as I like 21:9 it is less space than 4k.

Well... i get why it seems that way when you at it on paper. But anyone who has gamed on 21:9 will swear by it and say "21:9 > all", regardless of resolution.

For us - all that 4k space is worthless because its 16:9, but we will definitely enjoy the sharpness when 5120x2160 is eventually released.

 

However, you said work is primary for you; then sure.. you want as much pixels as you can get!

 

The only thing i urge you do do is to get an IPS 4k, with gsync or freesync (even if you wont use freesync now, it might come in handy for the 14nm video cards).
