I'm using 8GB of RAM while running Minecraft and a server, however my RAM usage in Task Manager does not add up to that amount. I've dedicated up to 3GB to both the client and the server, but Task Manager says the client is using 3GB, while the server is using only 1GB. Also, if I close my client, I'm using 50% of my 16GB, though I should only be using 1-2GB.

You realize dedicating memory doesn't cause it to be utilized at 100% at all times right?

Also a lot of memory in your system is dedicated to your OS.  If you already have task manager open, you can check whats eating the memory.

If I dedicate a total of 6GB, does that mean 6GB will be "unavailable" to other applications, which is why so much of my RAM is unavailable? Even though I don't necessarily use all of that RAM at the time?
