Higher end older GPU? Or lower end newer one?

GrievingJosh

As the title suggests, what class of GPU is better? An older high end GPU, like for example a GTX 480, compared to a newer, lower end card such as a GTX 650? Or what ever GPU. Because I personally own a HD 3870, and obviously I will need an upgrade from that very very soon, but, you can now find older Higher end cards for around the same price as new one's, so I was just a bit curious as to which is better?

I would go for the newer one as its more power efficient, and it will have things like the latest version of direct-x support.

But I'm not a graphics card guy so I'm very interested in hear other people.

Well let's consider for a moment the two options you presented, GTX 480 and GTX 650. Both of these are generations old and extremely low end. At that level of performance, just get the cheapest because it really doesn't matter.

Neither are worth the money IMO. 660ti is the lowest I'd ever consider right now.

Usually graphics cards price = performance. When a card starts to get old it will drop in price to reflect performance, this isn't always true, but honestly just look at benchmarks, compare, and do a little maths not a big deal. Honestly your best bet is to tell us your budget and we will tell you what to get.

I'm doing a new build, I haven't got a high budget at all for this new build, so I'm holding onto my HD 3870 till I can save to get a new GPU, was thinking about a GTX 770 non-reference. I was just curious as all, which is why I created this thread. :P Anyway, so, budget (In a while when I have saved enough) will be around £3-400.

If you're on a budget and considering a 770 just get a 7950 and call it a day.

How well does it perform in comparison to a 770?

I do not see why people are recommending the gtx 650 since the gtx 480 is 1.5x the performance. Although it needs large amounts of power and gets loud and hot. If you are looking for the best performance 480 is better. If you are looking for a small quit card the 650 is better.

a little bit behind I believe, the 770 is essentially a beefed up 680, and the 7950 was usually a bit behind or even with the gtx 670. So you will get about 5-12% more performance I'd imagine.

7950 is about 20% weaker than a 770. While being 38% cheaper than a 770.

I hope you meant a beefed up 680

7950 is about 20% weaker than a 770. While being 60% cheaper.

But it'll still be fine for 1080p gaming right? With fairly decent framerates.

oh yeah, anything above a 760/7950 will handle 1080p with ease, but if you want to get into surround or 2560x1600 you may need a second card, or a higher tier card  (haven't seen benchmarks for surround/2560x1600 for the 770 yet)

I did edit my post, that 60 percent figure is WAY off, I was looking at the wrong prices, my bad.

But yes the 7950 still smokes modern games at 1080p, its a great "high end budget" card.

I mean if you have the money to spend I would get a 770, but if you're on a budget a 7950 will serve you just fine.

Overclock it and you should smoke most games at high/ultra.

The 7950/7970 are both great recommendations for their price, power and vram right now.

What's your budget for the card?

i would go with the older high end card cuz i think it will offer more preformance but will have a higher power consumption(not that i care)

Well, I'm going to need to save to get it, because I already have a GPU, so a new one is going to be my last purchase, it was originally around £3-400, but I might take a look at the 7950, or maybe a 7970.
