Wireless USB ADAPTER

Hello, i'm moving my gaming pc downstairs in my home and i do not want to have wires going throughout my house to connect my router to my computer downstairs. I'm planning on  getting a wireless usb adapter for connection, but do i need to configure my router to accept the wireless usb signal? Or simply just plug in the usb into the pc and it'll connect to the nearest router?

don't,

get a pcie one

the usb ones tend to get really hot.
