Getting my home security DVR to broadcast over the network.

I recently installed a home surveillance system. The DVR has ethernet port and some yanky software that doesn't work very well. I was wondering if there was another program I could use to access the streams from another computer on the network and over the internet. It's already assigned an ip address and I would also like to know how I can record the streams on another computer.
