moniter connection problems

I have 2 monitors i want to plug through hdmi.

My main monitor is running through hdmi

The second monitor is plugged in through a displayport to hdmi apdapter. 

when 1 monitor is plugged in it is fine, but once i plug in the second monitor both monitors say no signal
