Hey guys,

I've got a question. I recently replaced the standard system fan in the HP Pavilion 6260 of my parents with this one http://www.bequiet.com/en/casefans/262 because the old fan started to fail (was cleaned by someone with vacuum cleaner on max that probably wore out the bearing of the fan: it made strange noises and was very loose). However, I was a bit tired and didn't realize that I bought the fan with a 4pin PWM connection while the motherboard only had a 3 pin voltage connection to plug it in. I did some quick research on the internet and it appeared that plugging a 4pin PWM into a 3pin Voltage connector didn't matter: the PC would control the fan through voltage. I tried it out for a week or so and temps where fine even under heavy load. My sisters played SIMS 3 on the PC the whole freakin' day and just when they quit the game, the computer displayed an error: "System fan failed. Service the computer". Does anybody has some advise what to do? I would appreciate your view on this problem. Thanks in advance.

I don't think your sister playing Sims in relevant, as fans are stressed tested extensively, and the 3-pin 4-pin part isn't relevant either. Check the fan is plugged in correctly, try another fan header. Could be a faulty fan header.

Well, it sort of is relevant cause the case has not so much openings and only one casefan (CPU and GPU aside of course). The GPU (some crazy geforce GT230 from Pegatron) becomes very hot, around 92 degrees Celsius, when used all day cause its fansize is around 30mm and it has got a very small heatsink. So I think that the fan somehow didn't manage to cool the PC effectively. The fan is plugged in the correct fan header, there is only one system fan header on the motherboard  :P.

I don't understand, which part of my post that I said wasn't relevant do you think is relevant?

You said that my sister playing Sims wasn't relevant. I just wanted to give more information and I wanted to say that I think that because the Sims was played almost whole day, the temps inside became high and the PC would say that it was due to the new fan not performing well (in fact it performs better then the old one). I think I found the problem already, I googled around and found a thread on the HP support side about the errormessage. Seems that it has something to do with the BIOS version. I'm gonna flash it to the newest and we shall see. Thanks for the replies though.

You said that the problem was the fan itself. You didn't request help concerning the temperatures of your computer, about overheating. Therefore, you could have been playing runescape for all the fan cares, it doesn't really concern the fan itself.

I think you misunderstood the problem then, I never said it the problem was the fan, but I did keep in mind that the new fan COULD BE the problem. And yes, it is NOT relevant that they played Sims specifically, but it might be relevant that the constant gaming kept the temps high. And maybe the 4pin connector to 3 pin header was the problem, but it turned out to be the BIOS. Anyways, thanks for replying to my question.
