Though you might look for r9 390s as well, but don't get them if they too much pricer.

How much better is the performance compared to the 970?

Depends on game, at 1080p the difference isn't huge. But, if your gonna use the shield then you better get the 970 just make sure your network is good enough to stream to the shield.
