I'm trying to upgrade my friend's iMac, whose fan is loud as heck and is driving him crazy!  I am going to mod it and put a Noctua fan in it so it will be a good bit quieter.  I'm almost certain that the fan size is 120mm, but I'm not sure.  Does anybody know for certain?  The model is the 2010 version (I tried to get them to switch to PC, but they insist on keeping their iMac)

It uses a proprietary cooler like laptop fan

Thanks for your reply!  Since that is the case, what quiet proprietary fan do you recommend?

np, There is no other option other than apples fan.

I have seen people mod it, and I am prepared to.  I just have to pick out a fan.  Besides that fact, is there any quiet proprietary out there?

Not really. Any aftermarket blower fan will be equally loud or louder than stock because there's only so much you can doto make centrifugal fans quiet. Besides, a good cleaning will usually make a big difference on these things already, like removing dust from the heatsinks. It likely hasn't been cleaned since 2010, after all. But be warned, iMacs don't come apart easily and are even harder to reassemble.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.
