Both Xeon CPUs would still be inferior because the higher end Xeon maxes out at 3.9GHz while the 4790 starts out at 4GHz.

Ok, cuz I'm planning to upgrade my CPU as future GPU upgrades would be bottlenecked by my current CPU. so I think the 4790k is a good upgrade, or should I wait for the new Skylake processors?

You can wait for Skylake, but you will likely be disappointed. The CPU market has remained stagnant for a while - Sandy Bridge is still pretty okay and that was released in 2011.

I guess so, but you save in money and heat output with the Xeon.

But 4 3.9GHz Xeon cores compared to 4 4.0GHz i7 cores is not much difference, and considering that the Xeon is cheaper.

Ok Sweet... so is a 4790K a viable CPU upgrade for the next few years? Or should I just not care and stay with my 8350?

I also say go 4790K. You said something about video editing, right?

Yeah I do things like video editing, coding and code compiling, game development, CAD, etc.

8350 is dead, and likely bottlenecking your GPU in some games.

So 4790k it is! thanks :)

Z97 motherboards that follow the red/black scheme are more expensive then just regular Z97 motherboards... whatever...

Wut, why would they get sued?

Because not every CPU will turbo to the same amount. So they play it safe and give a lower number.

My 3570K can turbo to 3.8GHz even though it says it can only go to 3.4GHz.

If they did not do this, someone could say it was false advertisement.

The advertisement also says its turbo frequency allows for 3.8GHz. http://ark.intel.com/products/65520/Intel-Core-i5-3570K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz

Some motherboards treat the turbo differently and will turbo all four cores instead of one.

My box says 3.4GHz. 3.8GHz was advertised. I completely forgot about that. Though I never planned to run it at stock. (My MSI BIOS is mean sometimes with the turbo and won't turbo at all or won't downclock)

My laptop has the 4210U and that is 1.7GHz to 2.7GHz even though it will go to 3.0GHz. But then the fan starts grinding and it downclocks.

(Actually trying to RMA it right now)

I also have a 3210M which actually does not like to turbo at all, but when it does it will also go to 3.0GHz. And that only happens balanced mode in Windows is on. High performance just sticks it at 3.6GHz.
