Completely erase HDD?

So, i don't know exactly where to put this but i have a HDD that i'm planning to give to a friend for their new build but this HDD has a few viruses (from before i knew about anti-malware) and old school documents.

 

Can someone tell me how to effectively erase all the data, make it irretrievable and virus-free, to where it's in the same condition as i first bought it?

Just give it a normal format. Untick the "Quick Format" if you want to give it a proper format.

You can wipe them clean with ccleaner. Just plug in your drive and run ccleaner to wipe all the space. You can use multiple passes to make sure every single bit is erased.
