Intel Haswell 4670k + 4770K Overclocking guide

ProKoN

I gave it a whirl. No joy at 38 for me. I had better luck with 36. Stable at x40 and 1.25v. 19vin. Terrible but better than nothing I suppose.

I just discovered something weird--I don't know if this is just the case for my motherboard, but setting uncore ratio/cache freq. to default x34 actually sets the cache freq. to 3.9GHz, so maybe this has something to do with why x38 allows me to lower Vcore since I'm actually lowering the cache freq. I've now lowered the clock to 4.2GHz with 1.184V Vcore and x33 uncore ratio, following @fritzdis' settings in the google doc, and I get Prime95 stable for 2 hours with in-place large FFTs (uses AVX/2 instructions; most OC'd Haswell chips fail this). With all my fans set to silent, maximum temps I got ranged from 83 to 89 degrees C on FFT length less than 199K, but averaged from 55 to 63 degrees C with FFT length greater than 300K in latest version of Prime95. I just couldn't accept a non-AVX/2 stable set-up. Right now I'm happy. (I also got 4.3GHz Prime95/AVX/2 stable at 1.25V Vcore, but it reached 99 degrees C max when Prime95 used a short FFT length.)

I do have one minor problem: Sometimes, and let me emphasize not all the time, I could not wake my monitor when it goes to sleep. Just the monitor as my computer never sleeps. Mouse/keyboard activity does nothing so I have to reset my PC when that happens. It didn't seem like my computer froze during sleep ... or maybe it did, I don't know. I did set power management to high performance. Some possible causes I found googling were the video card driver, and I am about to test the solution in here (go to "PCI Express", "Link State Power Management" and set it to Off) [EDIT: it was already off], but the thing is that this only happens when I OC.

Hi,

I recently clocked my cpu to 4.6Ghz but its only stable with 1.45v on vcore and this makes cpu extremely hot (94oc on average) , but on 4.5Ghz it can handle with 1.27v (tested for 12h with prime 95 on maximum  heat profile, temps around 70oc).
ring bus is set to 3.9Ghz vccin is set to 2v and ram is set to 1333Mhz@ 1.5v.

Is there anyway i could make cpu stable(4.6Ghz) with lower voltages(vccin@1.9v didn't help)?

sorry no way to lower vcore.

maybe think about upgrading cooler to a 240mm aio.

I have a 4770k and I can't even get a stable 4,4GHz OC. I've tried voltages up to1,30V with max Temp at about 80. Bluescreen after half an hour. Should I increase the voltage further or try something else or just try for 4,3GHz?

nope I dont. I just picked one up yesterday.

its an ok part nothing mind blowing.

I hit 4.6 core and 4.6 uncore at 1.32V. will post results later.

depends on the luck of the draw. my last 4670k was a brilliant overclocker.

i hate this

s

i had a core 2 duo when i overclocked i couldn't hit 4ghz but my friend with the exact same setup hits 4.4ghz so its based on luck maybe you 4690k was the worst overclocker ???

by the way when i haerd the cpu will be call devil canuon i said wow that must be atleast 20% with more overlocking power and vary low heat but it was all in my dreams :(

from what i have seen so far the DC chips are almost binned a certain way. they all seem to be hitting 4.6-4.7ghz at around 1.3V, with the rare 4.8ghz exception. the next 100mhz seems to require a fair voltage increase thats why most people are topping out at around 1.3V.

here is the 4690k i have tested. 4.6 ghz at 1.3V cache at a 1:1 ratio. 4.7 was gonna take 1.47V. too hot for air

wow really good but the temps are high

Edit: can you put your 4690k clock speed and temp vs the 4670k ones

the 4670k is long gone.

the 4670k i had was a brilliant chip. it did 4.7 on air at 1.36V 4.8 on water at 1.45V. max temps would be 85 ish.last couple screenies in the second post.

i did have another 4670k that required 1.38v for 4.6ghz max temps 85 ish. 4.7 was a no go on that particular chip.sold it.

it really comes down to the luck of the draw. you could get a brilliant 4670k or one that is a voltage junkie.  the 4690k will almost guarantee 4.6ghz on air.

Just grabbed a 4790K, so I'll be looking to follow this guide for an overclock.

Sound like 4.6 is a good starting point for DC?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - CPU Cooler: Deepcool Castle 240EX - Motherboard: MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC

RAM: 2 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RBG 3200MHz - GPU: MSI RTX 3080 GAMING X TRIO

yep i think 4.6 is a pretty safe place to start with a dual tower air cooler.

This cooler kept my Q6700 below 90 degrees at 1.8V

It's pretty beast

how much you think shipping would be?

you need any ram? :)

I'm sorry my man, but it's my first rig, so I'm attached to the board, and I can't really let it go.

Plus, I'm far from done with it yet. I have 3 CPUs I have yet to overclock on this board, and 775 is only getting cheaper

i know the feeling. well if you ever feel like it needs a good home, you know where i live.

i can get my hands on loads of c2d and c2q chips  for $10-20 cdn

I just built my first rig. specs are I7-4790k, z97 sabertooth mach 1, dominator 16gb 1866 RAM, Asus gtx 780 GPU, H100i cooler, RM750w PSU. My question is right now i have my system OC using the EZ Tune on the motherboard. i'm getting 4.6GHz but i believe the voltage is variable. usually around 1.32 in AI suite 3. is it ok to use this or should i follow this guild? will you be doing a guild for the 4790k? I am a complete newbie to OC.

For people interested in what happend to my "throttling" issue, or should i say "de-turbo" i had one page back, this is how i solved it:

edit: removed, the problem came back :(

CPU runs at 87W. Hwinfo says its not thermal throttling.

if the auto OC works for you and your system is stable, it will be fine to run.

the 4790k is basically a 4770k so the guide works for Devils Canyon as well.

So I've been working around with my i7 4770k and I am currently hitting a thermal wall with the NH-D14 I'm using to cool it, I was able to back the voltage down to 1.28V and have it still be stable. Anything I should be tweaking to try to pump more out of my CPU (Currently Running stock TIM) and I am running a CPU Input Voltage of 1.8V(Stock: 1.7V) otherwise nothing else has been touched.

maybe you can try and delid your cpu and put some thermel paset like mx-4 and you will have better resulits

WARNING: deliding your cpu can destroy it if not carfuly
