For an office/web browsing only pc you could have 4 gigs and still be okay.

if you plan to update in the future  then yes 1 stick of 8 gb is fine.  But personally i'd take  of 2 x 4gb of ram so you can take advantage of dual channel.

I'll have to disagree with people saying 4GB is enough for office work. I often max out 8GB while having a couple excel sheets open and a few tabs in chrome open. which really slows down working in excel. So i'd say that you should never go under 8GB unless doing an extreme budget build for low res gaming.

depends on what "office applications" they are willing to run.
