So I just watched this video

and this guy does a USB RAID which I thought was cool. So I was wondering if it was possible to get 2 1TB external hard drives and put them in a raid 0 or something so they are as fast as SSDs but use them as my main hard drive with my OS and everything. It would honestly be great for hackers because with only one drive everything would be corrupted. Right?

you could put them in raid 10 instead and then you could have nearly half of them fail.

in your case you should use raid1 if you're worried about failure.

hackers don't corrupt drives.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

Well my whole thing is that I kind of want a key system for my computer. So you have to have both hard drives plugged in for the computer to even work. I also would like speed as fast as an SSD or close to one.

if you want a key system just use a flash drive.

use both externals in raid 0, and encrypt them.

SSD speed isn't going to be achieved with two 5400rpm external HDDs.

especially if they use USB connections.

you'd be better gutting the enclosures, pulling the drives out and connecting them internally with SATA connectors.

then stick them in raid and use them like internals.

I would not use external hard drives for a os drive, most are not designed to run 24/7 and tend to fail quicker due to heat and they get moved around a lit more then a normal internal drive. I also dont think the drives would work as a raid until the os is booted up since it is the os handling the raid via software. You still wont be able to get the performance of a ssd, in some cases you will be close but most of the time a good single ssd will perform much better.

Is there a raid that will allow me to get high read and write speeds but still have 2 TB is I was to use two 1 TB hard drives?

Right but they might be more budget friendly than buying a big SSD.

no, you can't magically make them faster.

you can run raid 10 if you have 4x1TB drives for a total of 2TB at double speed (in theory) but that's it.

dude, these drives weren't made for what you want them for. and i'd wager that they're 2.5in form factor too.

if you're interested in raid, go out and buy 4 new internal drives to play with. you can test a few types of raid with just 4 drives.

yeah, but an SSD is much less likely to fail and already has the speed.

Yeah but like I said it's a lot more expensive. Anyways so I'll be able to do a RAID setup with speeds close to an SSD and be able to use a key system for my PC? Do you think I'll be able to use my phone as the key or would I need an actual USB?

dude, you've got some great ideas, but the wrong hardware.

i really don't suggest you use those externals in a raid array.

your speeds will not be close to an SSD, but in raid 0 it will be faster than before.

a key system doesn't have anything to do with raid. it has to do with encryption and security policies, so you can do that regardless.

that being said, IDK, a phone could probably work. maybe and that'd be totes goats

Haha thanks, so I might use two 1 TB HDD drives and put them in some sort of raid that's good for speeds and won't damage the hardware too much then encrypt both drives and setup a key system with my phone or a USB.
